Tangem, a provider of self-custodial hardware crypto wallets in the form of smart cards, has partnered with Visa to introduce a revolutionary payment solution. This collaboration aims to integrate hardware wallet technology with Visa payment cards, allowing users to spend cryptocurrencies directly from their self-custodial wallets at merchant terminals or through online payment tools. The new product, called Tangem Pay, is expected to launch by the end of the year under the Tangem brand, according to Andrey Lazutkin, Tangem's Chief Technology Officer. The technology received certification from Visa in February 2022 and has since been patented, marking a crucial step towards mainstream adoption of cryptocurrency payments. Tangem co-founder Andrey Kurennykh described the product as a "two-in-one solution," combining the convenience of a regular bank card with the capabilities of a self-custodial crypto wallet. This integration aims to bridge the gap between traditional banking and digital assets, simplifying the use of both for everyday users. Initially, Tangem Pay will be available as a "standard Web3 service" accessible to users of various wallets, not limited to Tangem's own. The company is also developing a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that will enable banks to add crypto solutions to their product lines and allow blockchains to become payment platforms. While Tangem supports at least 59 networks, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, the new wallet will initially support Tether (USDT) on the Polygon network, with plans to expand to other cryptocurrencies in the future. Security and user convenience are key features of Tangem's solution. The wallet can function with or without a seed phrase, and 80% of Tangem's users have activated their wallets using the company's smart backup technology instead of traditional seed phrases. Tangem has already produced over one million cards and is available in at least 160 countries, with plans for further expansion. This wide reach positions the company to potentially reshape how cryptocurrencies are used in everyday transactions globally. Cuy Sheffield, Visa's head of crypto, emphasized the importance of this collaboration for the future of payments. He stated, "We are excited to work with Tangem to help enable effortless payments with digital currencies designed with security in mind."
