Disabled individuals, particularly hearing-impaired individuals have faced countless challenges for generations. Why are they viewed as the ‘others’; and why are their access to resources defined by people who have no idea what it is like to be deaf? By not recognizing the cracks in this system, society continues on the path of harming those who have different perspectives and different needs. This talk asks you to consider what can be lost when we ignore principles of equity and equality when one is trapped in the culture of ableism. Ananya Nakra was born deaf and diagnosed with profound hearing-loss at the age of 18 months. She got her Cochlear Implant surgery at the age of 2.5 years. Since she was one of the first recipients In North India to get this done, she and her family had to overcome a multitude of trials to get her to where she is today. Currently, she is pursuing a double major in Political Science and Psychology at the University of the British Columbia with the hope of going to law school and becoming a lawyer and help people. She has worked with several organisations to help spread awareness about hearing-impairment and has written multiple articles for the same. She was invited to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference in 2018 as well. Coming from India, a country that lacks awareness and faces countless issues, she aims to bridge the gap between the global north and the global south through campaigns for changes in policies. She wants every hearing-impaired child to feel like they belong. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
