Surprisingly enough, a document concerning the Union of Lublin, one of the most important events in the course of our history, has indeed survived. It is kept tightly sealed in a Warsaw archive and may not be seen by the public, which is why the Polish History Museum has made its faithful copy. Before you can see it at the Museum’s permanent exhibition, it can be appreciated already now in a film. Apart from being a highly important documentary, it is also very beautiful. The film titled The Union of Lublin: the Copy and the Original focuses on the behind-the-scenes events leading to the drafting of the original document and its turbulent history. It also discusses a major challenge that the creation of its copy was, supposed to match the original that contained more than 20,000 words. The creators of the film unveil the secrets of the work of copyists who say about themselves: ‘Being a copyist is close to being a forger. Yet we always hide the fact that the work is ours. It is not about misleading law enforcement authorities, but misleading the viewer’s eye.’ The film also features interviews with archivists who protect the most precious Polish documents. The Union of Lublin was one of the defining moments of Polish history. Concluded on 1 July 1569, it laid a foundation for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The common state of the Poles and Lithuanians lasted for more than two centuries, until the time when it was erased from the map of Europe, having been partitioned in 1795. A conservator’s copy of the Union of Lublin Act is going to be one of the key exhibits at the Polish History Museum.
