Set in a peaceful Shropshire valley near the Welsh border, Stokesay Castle was built in the 1280s by the immensely rich wool merchant Laurence of Ludlow. The castle comprises a walled, moated enclosure, with an entrance way through a timber and plaster gatehouse, added in the 17th-century. Inside, the courtyard faces a stone great hall and solar block, protected by two stone towers. Stokesay Castle was never intended to be a serious military fortification and is one of the best-preserved fortified medieval manor houses in England. We visited on a dark, drizzly day in October; there is only low light inside the buildings and so the quality of the video is compromised in the internal shots. MUSIC 1. Sweet Love from Pixabay 2.
