This video highlights the Class 159 South Western Turbo DMU which was introduced to the West of England Main Line in 1993. Originally built as Class 158 units for Regional Railways, they were not then required due to the downturn in the economy affecting the UK in the 1990's. They were then transferred to Network Southeast and sent to Babcock Rail where First Class accommodation was fitted along with retention toilets. The units were the renumbered as 159001-159022 and allocated to the West of England Main Line to run between Waterloo and Exeter St Davids. All the 159's were allocated to a the new Salisbury diesel depot. They brought a much needed upgrade to the service replacing the ageing class 47 diesel and coaches with faster more reliable air conditioned stock. Footage for this video covers Waterloo to Exeter, Salisbury to Bristol and Waterloo to Corfe Castle via Yeovil.
