Excel - Calculate Discounts Based On Tiers In Excel - Episode 1955

Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Discount Tiers in Excel. Welcome to the MrExcel podcast. In this episode, we will be discussing Discount Tiers in Excel, where only the units above the Tier receive a discount. This question comes all the way from Pakistan, where Mohammed is struggling to calculate the total amount of charges for different tiers. As always, I'm your host Bill Jelen and I'm here to help you navigate through this problem. Now, I have to admit, nothing irks me more than receiving a question in all caps with very little explanation. But, despite the lack of details and a massive merged cell, we are going to tackle this issue head on. The question at hand is to calculate the total charges based on different tiers, where each tier has a different percentage of discount. As you can see in the example provided, the tiers are based on the number of units and the charges increase as the units increase. To solve this problem, we will be using a combination of VLOOKUP and LOOKUP functions. First, we will create a reference using the unit numbers and the total number of units. Then, we will use the INDIRECT function to generate all the numbers from 1 to the total number of units. Next, we will use the LOOKUP function, which can handle an array as the first argument, to look up the unit numbers in the reference we created earlier. This will give us the percentage of charges for each unit. Finally, we will multiply this percentage by the original charge and sum up all the results to get the total amount. This solution eliminates the need for nested IF statements and makes the formula much shorter and easier to understand. However, it is important to note that the lookup table must be arranged in ascending order for this solution to work. Additionally, we have also provided a solution for a real-life scenario where the tiers have a discount instead of an increase in charges.
