Shimano's $82 All-Steel Deore Cassette is BETTER than the $390 Titanium XTR Option

The $80 Shimano Deore or $82 Shimano SLX Cassettes will last you far longer than the $390 XTR cassette. All of these cassettes have the exact same functionaility, with weight being the only difference between them. The XTR is made up of aluminum, titanium, and steel cogs. The aluminum and titanium allow it to save 8oz over the all steel Deore, but being softer metals they will also wear faster. For everyone except pro racers, the Deore/SLX/XT are where you want to be. Really though, the weight savings between each of these three is only about 60g. The Deore is all steel, the SLX swaps the largest cog out to aluminum, and the XT swaps the two largest to aluminum. For absolute longevity, go with the Deore. For a slight weight savings and a cool looking black largest cog, take the SLX.
