Octopath Traveler II is Turn-based Role-Playing Game co-developed by Square Enix (also its publisher) and Acquire and is a sequel of the sleeper hit 2018 game, Octopath Traveler. In this game, we are now going to the lands of Solistia, a setting which looks like to be more modern to the lands of Orsterra in the first game. Like the first game, you will be playing 8 main characters who has differing stories which will lead to each of them going on a journey to reach their own goals, it could be to save a nation, to achieve a dream, to attain freedom, or other more reasons. A game that received Metacritic scores of 85 (Switch), 86 (PS5), and 83 (PC) which is notably higher than the first game. Praises were made to the quality-of-life improvements, the upgraded design and visuals, and the addition of new mechanics such as a night and day cycle as well as new path actions for its playable characters. Anent the criticisms, although still considered an improvement from the first game considering cross path chapters, critics still found the story to be weak as the main chapters were merely focused on a single character without any or only minor participation from the others. As for me, I am really a big fan of the first game which is the reason I bought a switch. For this game, it did not disappoint. I love the clear improvements in the character designs and visuals, although I preferred the smaller sprites and larger areas of the first game. The gameplay was not that much different from the first game outside the introduction of character super moves which could be an attack, heal or support depending on the character. I also the found the dungeons in this game to be smaller than the first game which they make up by making more than dungeons in this game. For the story, I disagree with the critics and loved the varying character-focused stories since I understand them deeper and it shows better character development on their part. To better improve the interaction of the characters, the game introduced cross path chapters which tells a story of two characters going in a particular journey together, its short and few, but a welcome mechanic in the series. Overall, a very great RPG that is a good mixture of old school turn based jrpgs and modern rpg style, a very recommended game for the fans fo the genre. Enjoy!!!
