There were games I played endlessly as a kid… and then there were the ones I ignored without a second thought. Heretic was one of those. Back in the late 90s, while I was busy playing Doom, Duke Nukem and Blood, Heretic just didn’t click with me. The medieval setting, the fantasy weapons… it wasn’t what I was looking for at the time. I’d launch it, play for a few minutes, then move on. But for some reason, the game never really left my mind. So many years later, I finally came back to it — this time through the modern re-release by Nightdive Studios — and what I found surprised me. This isn’t just another Doom-style shooter. Heretic does things differently. From its item-based gameplay and unique weapons to its atmosphere and level design, it feels like a completely different take on the 90s FPS formula. And somehow… that difference is exactly what makes it special. In this video, I revisit Heretic, talk about its history, how it was received, what makes it stand out, and why it finally clicked for me after all these years.
