Spandau is only five years older than Berlin city, as long time residents sometimes like to stress proudly. The old city of Spandau is the historic center (Old Town) of the Spandau district in the western suburbs of Berlin. It is located on the right bank of the Havel River, where it converges with the Spree tributary. It originated near the ruins of the former Slavic kingdom during the Ostsiedlung expansion in the early 13th century. A castle in Spandowe, built on Havel Island to protect the eastern border of the Marquis of Brandenburg, has been recorded in the contract issued by Otto II, Marquis of Askania in 1197. The Elector of Hohenzollern also protected the city from Spandau Castle, a Renaissance fortress built on the site of a medieval castle since about 1560. The walled old town became the core of the larger Spandau fortress, which was built under the rule of Prussia after the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century and was also the center of the German arms industry.
