11/17/21 - Western red cedar, basswood or white pine, and purpleheart are the three wood species in the paddle building kit from wavetrainSUP. The five shaft strips, the blade pieces, the handle pieces and the trim pieces are all part of the kit. This video goes into a bit more detail on the wood that comes with every paddle building kit. The kit also contains all the little odds and ends that become apparent at the moment you need them and discover you don't have them. Mixing cups, mixing sticks, brushes, and wax paper are also part of the kit. The epoxy and fiberglass are also 'right-sized' for a paddle project, so you're not stuck with a half gallon of left over resin and hardener. The centerpiece is a form that makes it easy to align the shaft strips, introduce the bend, and gently compress the strips while the adhesive dries. There are lots of ways to build a paddle. many start with thick pieces of wood and with spokeshave, etc. make those into thin pieces. I have a hard time with wasting that much wood, especially western red cedar. The shaft strips and the blade pieces come to you as quarter inch thick pieces. The magic of epoxy and fiberglass provide the strength and stiffness, while the wood gives the shape and a base for the epoxy to bond with. A fraction of the wood is wasted, which I think is a good thing. No worries, there's still plenty of shaping to be done! I hope you enjoy your build project and enjoy your time on the water!
