"Ellens dritter Gesang" ("Ellen's Third Song") ("Ellens Gesang III", D. 839, Op. 52, No. 6, 1825) was originally composed in 1825, for piano and voice (soprano), by Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Often known under the latin title "Ave Maria", or as "Ave Maria! Jungfrau Mild!" (Hail Mary! Maiden Mild!), the opening words and refrain of Ellen's song, a song which is itself a prayer to the Virgin Mary. These song's opening words and refrain may have led to the idea of adapting Schubert's melody as a setting for the full text of the traditional Roman Catholic prayer Ave Maria. The piece was composed as a setting of a song from Walter Scott's 1810 popular epic poem "The Lady of the Lake", in a German translation by Adam Storck (1780-1822) and forms part of Schubert's Liederzyklus vom Fräulein vom See (a collection of 3 songs, by Franz Schubert) Piano solo arrangement (No. 10 on Ausgewälte Lieder von Frans Schubert) (ca. 1880) by German composer August Horn (1825-1893) (Edition C. F. Peters) An arrangement of Schubert's Ave Maria was featured in Walt Disney's animated movie "Fantasia" (1940), transcripted (for chorus and orchestra) and directed by Leopold Stokowski.
