South Africa’s Health Product Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) is expected to make a decision on whether to approve the use of the twice-yearly #HIV prevention drug, #lenacapavir by the end of October. Lenacapavir has been touted as the tool to turn the tide in the fight against HIV but SA can only start rolling out the drug once SAHPRA has approved it. Since 2016, around two million people have started on the daily #hivprevention pill, making SA the country with the biggest pre-exposure prophylaxis (#PrEP) programme in the world. But the country has not reaped the full benefits of this rollout. Speaking at a roundtable on lenacapavir access and sustainability in Kempton Park this week, Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi says for many individuals at risk of HIV, the current prevention options are not yielding the results required. "Oral PrEP is effective, but retention and adherence have been suboptimal. Many users find it difficult to take a pill every single day due to stigma, pill fatigue, or life circumstances,” says Motsoaledi. Lenacapavir offers greater discretion, convenience, and likely much better adherence for users. Find out more here: https://health-e.org.za/2025/10/15/sa... via Ina Skosana. #healthnews #southafrica
