Kadykchan - the Largest Ghost Town in Eastern Russia

Kadykchan is a depopulated urban locality of Magadan Region, Russia. It was built by GULAG prisoners during World War II for the purposes of coal extraction. Coal was used mainly at a local electric power station, which supplied electricity to 2/3 of the Magadan region. In the late eighties, more than 10 thousand people lived there. Life was in full swing: shops, restaurants, a cinema, a House of Culture, a bathhouse worked. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, coal mining in the area became increasingly unprofitable.
