Various of destruction STORYLINE: Lebanese citizens continued streaming back to the war-torn south on Wednesday, in an effort to return to normality and learn what has become of their homes and livelihoods. In the battered southern city of Nabatiyeh residents found scenes of near total destruction. Bulldozers cleared rubble and rescuers continued to work around the clock to retrieve the missing, buried under mountains of rubble of the buildings laid to waste by Israeli warplanes. Residents began the gradual task of cleaning and rebuilding their homes and places of work. "Thank God that we are safe, our souls are worth more than our house and anything in this world," said Zahra Jarber, as she began to put her home in order. Similar scenes of destruction could be seen in Abbassiyeh, 3 kilometres (1.8 miles) from the port city of Tyre. And in Khiam, near the eastern end of the border with Israel, AP Television material filmed on Tuesday which showed that very little escaped unscathed after the bombardment. Residents sifted through the remains of their damaged homes. Some found unexploded ordnance. "Is there a house left undamaged? Is there a house left standing?" one unnamed resident said, then added, "This is Israel". Four peacekeepers died in Khiam last month in an airstrike that Israel said was intended to hit Hezbollah fighters. UN chief Kofi Annan said the attack appeared to be deliberate. Khiam is an infamous name in modern Lebanese history: in 1985 the main barracks were converted into a detention and interrogation centre by the South Lebanon Army (SLA), which was Israel's proxy army during its occupation. The centre remained in use for the incarceration and interrogation of Lebanese civilians until Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon in May 2000 and was notorious for widespread use of torture.
