On Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch served as the LBJ Foundation's Tom Johnson Lecturer. In conversation with LBJ Foundation President and CEO Mark K. Updegrove, Gorsuch spoke about his new book, "A Republic, If You Can Keep It." Updegrove, president and CEO of the LBJ Foundation /// About the Book In his new release, "A Republic, If You Can Keep It," Justice Neil Gorsuch reflects on his journey to the Supreme Court, the role of the judge under our Constitution, and the vital responsibility of each American to keep our republic strong. As Benjamin Franklin left the Constitutional Convention, he was reportedly asked what kind of government the founders would propose. He replied, "A republic, if you can keep it." In this book, Justice Neil Gorsuch shares personal reflections, speeches, and essays that focus on the remarkable gift the framers left us in the Constitution. He also reveals some of the events that have shaped his life and outlook, from his upbringing in Colorado to his Supreme Court confirmation process. And he emphasizes the pivotal roles of civic education, civil discourse, and mutual respect in maintaining a healthy republic. /// About the Lectureship The Tom Johnson Lectureship was established in 2010 in recognition of and appreciation for Mr. Tom Johnson's 30 years of distinguished service as chairman of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation Board of Trustees. Mr. Johnson served as executive assistant to President Johnson and, later, as president and then chairman of CNN. The lectures made possible by the Tom Johnson Lectureship are open to the student body of The University of Texas at Austin and the general public free of charge.
