The temperature dropped to -14°C and the snow turned to ice. We started walking in the fading daylight along an old canal where loggers used to float timber down from the deep woods of the Bohemian Forest (Šumava mountains). Halfway through, the forest went almost completely dark. The only sound left was frozen snow breaking under our boots. We passed a house standing alone in the woods, then a small power station running quietly in the cold. No music. No talking. Just the sharp crack of ice-hard snow and the slow fade from twilight into total darkness.
