Saladin | Jerusalem | Crusade history | Islamic history | Persian history | Assassins | viral Assassins history begins with Hassan-i Sabbah, a Persian scholar who built the most feared secret society in medieval history from a single mountain fortress. The Nizari Ismailis, known as the Assassins, controlled empires for 200 years using fear, precision, and absolute loyalty—until the Mongols destroyed them in 1256. Hassan-i Sabbah founded the Assassins in 1090 after conquering Alamut Castle without a single battle. From this impregnable fortress in Persia, he created a new form of warfare: targeted political assassination. His followers killed governors, generals, and even grand viziers in broad daylight, then calmly accepted execution. The message was clear—no one was safe. The word "assassin" itself comes from this organization. Derived from the Arabic "Hashshashin," it entered every major language on Earth because of their reputation. Crusaders feared them. Saladin negotiated with them after Assassins infiltrated his tent while he slept. Richard the Lionheart chose diplomacy over war against them. But when Hulagu Khan's Mongol army arrived in 1256, the Age of the Assassins ended. The Mongols besieged Alamut, executed every defender, and burned their library. The last grandmaster, Rukn al-Din Khurshah, died forgotten on a road in Mongolia. Today, roughly 15 million Nizari Ismailis exist worldwide, led by the Aga Khan. But the legacy of Hassan-i Sabbah's doctrine lives on: you don't need an army to change the world—just one person, in the right place, at the right time.
