My lady cat & I went out on the water on a freakishly warm October evening. I wanted to test out the adhesive strength and ergonomics of my recently installed kayak camera mounts. After I purchased the Oru Kayaks, I bought some accessory items from Oru: one of which was the Railblaza camera mount kit which included an adhesive base block and an articulating arm. I’ve had those sitting in my garage for at least a year. I recently went on a couple of kayaking adventures, one local & one with a group, which reinforced the need for a better hands-free video recording setup while paddling on the water. I purchased an additional set of screw-on Railblaza Starport base blocks from Amazon to install on my hard-sided kayaks, which allows me to swap the articulating arms between the Oru and the Viper kayaks. Installation was fairly simple. The base has a multi-point star socket and a locking mechanism. It’s important to keep dust & debris out of the socket, as it could impede the arm from fully seating into the base socket. Some models have a rubber flip-cover to keep dust out of the socket, but mine does not. Besides camera mounts, Railblaza makes fishing rod holders, sonar device holders, and other “fishing” accessories that mount into the base blocks. There’s multiple types of mountings available: adhesive, screw mount, rail mount. As we kayaked around the lake, I played around with the location and direction of the camera on the kayak. I have one block installed on the front of the kayak, and one on the rear. With the Go Pro Hero 13, the optional magnetic quick release base allows for easy swap out of the camera between mounts or the direction in which the camera is facing. The arms do have locking features but I left the articulation joints free to move on this excursion. I locked the arm into the base, so it wouldn’t pop out during my time on the water.
