"On Friday, February 27, at approximately 12:50 p.m., Officers Sawyer and Thorpe were dispatched to the area of 7th Avenue and Sheridan Road for a report of a man stuck in the water. Officer Sawyer arrived on scene, quickly retrieved his personal flotation device and water throw bag from the rear of his squad, and immediately went to work. As required for officer safety during water-related calls, Officer Sawyer donned his personal flotation device before making contact with the individual in the water. The male appeared calm as Officer Sawyer clearly explained how the throw-bag process would work. Officer Sawyer then deployed the throw bag with precision, enabling the male to securely grasp the rope and be safely pulled from the freezing water. Throughout the rescue, Officer Sawyer maintained steady communication, allowing the male time to rest when needed and ensuring a coordinated and safe extraction. We are incredibly thankful for Officer Sawyer’s quick thinking, professionalism, and training, which led to a successful outcome. We also commend the citizen who called for first responders, the Kenosha Fire Department for their swift response and for the fallen male for remaining calm, and working alongside officers during the rescue."
