Steep Ground Harvesting Lochaber 2nd half Video is courtesy of Forest Enterprise Scotland and features the Steep Ground Project team led by Kate Tuer. Kate explains that the aim of the project was to test and evaluate skyline systems and steep ground working techniques to establish the most efficient and cost effective timber production methods. The project was also tasked with providing facts, figures and guidance for use by the wider forest industry on training requirements and technical developments for steep ground working. The second half of the video has the same beginning as that of the first half shown on Picture Number 2877 but recommences following the procurement by Calum Duffy of a larger cable crane system capable of 5 tonne loads using a locking Koller carriage on an 18mm skyline capable of going out to 500 metres. Calum also demonstrated the setting up and use of pump action felling jack which has the ability to effortlessly lever over trees even though they are leaning back at quite an angle. Of course as ever the careful alignment and execution of a strong felling hinge is crucial.
