⚠️ There were originally nine chicks, but currently only eight have been spotted on camera. It's possible that one of the chicks had already died (or been eaten) somewhere we couldn't see, but we have no evidence to prove that. However, since I don't know which ones are missing, and there's no proof that they've died, I'll keep counting them as nine for the title. And,It's also difficult to number them because you don't know which chicks are gone. Therefore, the largest chick is #1 and the smallest chick is #9, but we hope you understand that these are temporary names. ---------- I keep a watchful eye over the pair of barn owls raising their young in this nest. The year 2024 was particularly trying. Just 16 days after their five chicks were brutally killed by an intruder, the parent birds started breeding again. They laid so many eggs that sometimes the chicks died because they couldn't keep up with the food. The mother's sense of loss and grief at losing her chicks was clear to all to see. This is a barn owl (Tito Alba) nest near the "Casa Palillos" visitor center in Cabañeros National Park, located between the provinces of Ciudad Real and Toledo in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Its current area is 40,856 hectares. It was declared a national park in 1995 because "it is of common public interest to protect Cabañeros as a natural space representative of the Mediterranean forest ecosystem." One of the most remarkable ecosystems is the "Laña", a vast expanse of grassland almost devoid of trees, surrounded by mountains covered with Mediterranean forests. This area is an ideal place for barn owls to hunt the small rodents and birds that they feed on. Barn owls usually build their nests in cavities in houses, without the presence of humans. This nest box was installed more than 20 years ago, as there were fewer and fewer available holes to encourage breeding. Since then, they have endured the noise of the many visitors that visit the park every year, and rarely go a year without breeding.
