Kya Quinn heads under the sea for our latest episode of Yellow Spandex all about Aquaman! » Subscribe to NowThis Nerd: http://go.nowth.is/Nerd_Subscribe With the upcoming release of the Justice League movie 2017, we’re devoting an entire episode of Yellow Spandex to the monarch of mollusks, the king of crabs, the emperor of eels himself: Aquaman! When it comes to Justice League, Aquaman is poised to be one of the breakout characters of the Justice League movie. For the DCEU Aquaman, Justice League could be the character’s defining moment when it comes to mainstream audiences, even though the DC comics character has been around since 1941. As played by Jason Momoa, Aquaman has a wild, barbarian vibe to him, which is a far cry from the orange and green aquatic avenger that we’re used to seeing for the Aquaman costume. For Aquaman, Jason Momoa is bringing his trademark wildman look to a very different incarnation of the character. But, this Aquaman isn’t without precedent, he’s based on a specific era from the Aquaman comics. We’ll get there soon, but first we have to explore the history of Aquaman costumes from the DC comic books. From the initial debut of the classic Aquaman orange and green costume, it went more or less unchanged through the Silver Age. Aquaman finally got a true secret identity: Arthur Curry, or Orin. Aquaman didn’t get a true costume revamp until 1986, when Aquaman got a blue underwater camouflage costume. It didn’t last very long, though. He went back to his classic Aquaman costume until 1994, when Peter David turned the world of Aquaman upside down. Aquaman sank into a deep depression and grew out a shaggy hair and beard. Aquaman also lost his hand, which he replaced with a badass Aquaman harpoon hand. There would be a few more Aquaman comic book costumes over the years, but between the classic Aquaman costume and the wild gladiator look, those are the two most important Aquaman costumes. When it comes to cartoons, beyond an early Filmation Aquaman cartoon and the Super Friends Aquaman, the best animated Aquaman is probably the DCAU Aquaman. Though Aquaman first appeared on Superman: The Animated Series, the best known appearances of DCAU Aquaman are the Justice League Aquaman and the Justice League Unlimited Aquaman, or JLU Aquaman. The Brave and the Bold Aquaman is also pretty great, especially once you realize he’s voiced by Bender Rodriguez, and the Young Justice Aquaman is pretty dope as well. As far as a live action Aquaman movie goes, in one universe it already happened: James Cameron’s Aquaman. Entourage based a long-running on a fictional Aquaman movie, and the brief glimpse we get of the Entourage Aquaman costume doesn’t exactly fill us with hope. Aquaman also appeared on Smallville, where his orange and green Aquaman costume comes from the University of Miami. This Aquaman was going to be spun off into his own Aquaman TV show, codenamed Mercy Reef, but we never got to see a costume from that version. Finally, we’ve come to the modern DCEU Aquaman. The Jason Momoa Aquaman costume is definitely a departure from the classic Aquaman costume, but by the time the Justice League movie comes out, he might be our new favorite superhero.
