Styled in a 12-bar blues arrangement, Charles Segar was first to record the song Key to The Highway in February, 1940. It was released in April on the Vocalion label and was also made available on the Okeh label at, or about, the same time. The song was originally credited to Segar alone, but later credits reveal that Key To The Highway was co-written with Big Bill Broonzy. Jazz Gillum released the song on the Bluebird label later in 1940 and Broonzy's recording of the song was released on the OKeh label the following year. Both Gillum's and Broonzy's releases were the same 8-bar arrangement. Their adapted arrangement became popular as the song's familiar standard. The song was covered by Brownie McGhee and by John Lee Hooker before Little Walter and His Jukes released his rendition in October 1958. Little Walter's 'Jukes' featured none-other Muddy Waters and Luther Tucker on guitars, the great Willie Dixon on bass, George Hunter on drums and Otis Span on piano. Walter recorded the song as a tribute to Big Bill Broonzy after Broonzy's death in August that year. Many point to Little Walter's version as definitive, but the list of other artists who covered the song extends to over 150. Among those that followed were The Rolling stones who recorded the song In November, 1964, at the Chess Records studio. Eric Clapton first recorded it in 1970 with Derek and The Dominoes. Notably, too, is that the Alman Brothers Band, performed the song at Duane Allman's memorial service at Snow’s Funeral Home in Macon, November 1, 1971. Lyrics I got the key to the highway, I'm raring to go I got the key to the highway, I'm raring to go 'Cause I'm gonna leave here running, walking's most too slow I'm going back to the border where I'm better known I'm going back to the border where I'm better known 'Cause you ain't doing nothing but driving a good man away from home Give me one more kiss, mama, one more kiss before I go Give me one more kiss, babe, just before I go I'm gonna leave here, ain't coming home no more When the moon creeps over the mountain, I'll be on my merry way When the moon creeps over the mountain, I'll be on my merry way I'm going to walk the highway until the break of day So long baby, I must say goodbye So long, so long baby, I must say goodbye I'm gonna roam the highway until the day I die
