TEMPEROMANDIBULAR JOINT(TMJ) EXAMINATION AND PLAIN FILM IMAGING

TMJ is only mobile structure in oro-facial region. It is located between glenoid fossa, inferior surface of temporal bone, and condylar process of mandible. It is synovial type of joint, also called as gigglymodiarthrodial type of joint meaning that it has relatively sliding type of movement, between bony surfaces, in addition to hinge movement, common to diarthrodial joint. There are many types of TMJ disorders which can be diagnosed by clinical examination and radiographic examination. Clinical examination include palpation and auscultation of TMJ. This can be done by two methods: [1] Intra articular method of TMJ Examination: It is performed by inserting small finger into ear canal and pressing anteriorly. [2] Pre- tragus method of TMJ Examination: Patient should be requested to slowly open and close mouth while examiner bilaterally palpates pre-tragus depression with index finger. Plain film imaging modalities include Transcranial view,Transpharyngeal view and Transorbital View.
