Welcome to 4Luna – Hiking in harmony with nature On this channel, we share authentic hiking and outdoor experiences in the Velebit Mountains and Lika region. This video was created as part of the “Happy Me, Healthy Planet” project, highlighting the connection between sustainability and mental health. It was presented at the project’s closing conference in Bucharest, showcasing how outdoor experiences, nature-based education and conservation efforts can promote well-being for both people and the planet. In this video, we highlight the work of the Rewilding Velebit Foundation, a non-profit organization and local partner of Rewilding Europe. Their mission is to restore wild nature in Croatia, protect wildlife and raise awareness about the importance of healthy and resilient ecosystems. Rewilding is the process of restoring species, habitats and natural ecological functions so that landscapes can gradually become self-sustaining, rich in biodiversity and balanced without constant human intervention. This approach allows nature to regain its own processes and create habitats that support diverse flora and fauna. Rewilding Velebit currently manages around 30,000 hectares of land through multiple concessions, with the goal of transitioning the region from traditional hunting practices toward a wildlife-based, sustainable economy. One of the foundation’s most remarkable initiatives is the natural grazing pilot project on the Lika Plains, where semi-wild herbivores such as Tauros cattle and horses help maintain grasslands, improve habitat conditions and support species that rely on these ecosystems. This project also reintroduced the Tauros, historically known as the Aurochs or “tur” in Croatian, highlighting the connection between conservation, biodiversity and cultural heritage. Traveling with 4Luna, visitors experience hiking tours that integrate these conservation principles directly into their outdoor adventure. Participants explore remote forests, mountain peaks and untouched areas of Velebit while learning about local ecosystems, the principles of rewilding and the cultural and historical heritage of the region. All tours are carefully designed for small groups to ensure a personal, immersive and educational experience in nature, where each visitor can engage with the landscape and wildlife in a meaningful way. 4Luna’s approach also emphasizes support for local communities. By connecting travelers with traditional culture, local products and sustainable initiatives, our tours help strengthen rural economies, promote nature-positive tourism and allow visitors to leave a positive impact on the regions they explore. Guests learn about local crafts, culinary traditions and the efforts of community members who work to conserve their natural surroundings, combining outdoor adventure with cultural appreciation and ecological awareness. Additionally, Rewilding Velebit organizes volunteer activities and educational programs, giving visitors a chance to actively contribute to conservation. They also offer wildlife observation hides, photo safaris and guided educational hikes, giving visitors the chance to experience biodiversity up close while understanding the role humans play in protecting it.
