In this conversation, Talya Lewin Russell speaks with Natalie Bergman, an American woman who grew up in Israel and is currently living in the Czech Republic, about identity, responsibility, and grassroots solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Natalie shares her personal journey - growing up in Israel, choosing not to serve in the military, and how October 7th became a turning point that pulled her into activism after years of distance. She speaks honestly about Israel, racism, the Holocaust, and the gradual awakening that led her to connect deeply with Palestinians through language exchange. From an unexpected decision to learn Arabic, Natalie met Khaled through a WhatsApp language exchange group. Together, Nat and Khaled co-created two powerful initiatives: Shared Language, a project that enables Palestinians in the West Bank who have lost their work permits to earn a living by teaching Arabic online, and A Thousand Shekels for Freedom (also known as $300 for Freedom) - an urgent mutual aid effort addressing debt imprisonment and economic collapse in the West Bank. Natalie also shares about the RPE initiative, co-led with Adva Barkai, which works to raise awareness about Palestinian abductees. Together, Talya and Nat discuss: • What it means to be Israeli and actively oppose the occupation • How language can become a bridge - and where racism still shows up • The devastating economic reality in the West Bank since October 7 • Why grassroots, people-to-people support matters now more than ever This is an honest and moving conversation about solidarity, responsibility, and finding human connection in the midst of immense injustice.
