LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53, "Waldstein" Ying Li, piano Performed on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 Field Concert Hall, Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia Around 1802, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) confided in a fellow composer: “I am not satisfied with the work I have done so far. From now on I intend to take a new way.” He then embarked on what would become some of his most prolific years of composing; later it came to be called his middle or “heroic” period. To diverge from the classical forms of the previous century, Beethoven sought to express a full range of emotions—from triumph to sadness and struggle. It was in this period that Beethoven composed his Piano Sonata No. 21, Op. 53, known as the “Waldstein” for its dedication to one of Beethoven’s friends and patrons, Count Ferdinand Ernst Gabriel von Waldstein. Beethoven weaves an emotional narrative throughout the work’s three movements. The first begins softly, but with a an intense rhythm conveying great urgency. The insistent energy continues throughout the movement, contrasting with the spacious slow movement that follows. The beginning of the third movement seems much more lyrical and poetic than the first, but is not without virtuosic runs and variations on the singable melody. Possibly it was this tuneful movement that gave rise to another nickname for this sonata, “L’Aurora” (the dawn). At dawn comes birdsong, light, understanding, and new beginnings. Indeed, Beethoven had kept to his word and taken “a new way” with this sonata. Learn more about this work: • Student Recital: Intro: BEETHOVEN Son... #CurtisIsHere #Beethoven250
