Tom Paxton's unreleased ballad "The Cardinal" tells a hilarious story of a right-wing pro-war Christian Cardinal, Francis J. Spellman. It was one of Bob Dylan's favorite Tom Paxton songs. Tom once talked about the song in an interview: "It was one of my throw-away songs. I wrote it never intending to sing it for very long time. Cardinal Spellman used to go over to Vietnam at Christmas to see the troops... breathing hypocrisy, blood and guts... war against godless Communism and all that crap and I wrote this song to the tune of Matty Groves, about him walking on the water over there, you know, and if Jesus had been alive he'd be right there with him with a carbine in his hand, shooting..."
