Sir William Purdie Treloar (Lord Mayor of London 1906) founded a hospital in the country for crippled children. The hospital was opened in 1907 in Alton, Hampshire: SIR WILLIAM TRELOAR (Reel 2) The children are taking part in an obstacle race: The crawl under a tarpaulin and through barrels swinging on ropes. Amongst them are boys on crutches. 'The Treacle Bun Race' - they must eat buns hanging from a piece of string. The boys in smart clothes walk past a priest on their way to church. The benefactors of the home meet with Sir William Treloar in the grounds. Sir William looks at the baskets that the children have woven. He chats to a child on a leg exercising machine. Pan along Sir William (always wearing a top hat), a nurse and several adults sitting in the sun in the garden under a parasol. Sir William removes his hat and puts on warm travelling clothes for the journey home in his open top car. Nurses ripping up sheets to make bandages. CU bandage preparation. MS a doctor prepares items in a operating theatre / surgery. CU a child having his leg and ribcage put into plaster. Once set, the plaster case is cut off. The nurses use the plaster case as a mould. The process of making a plaster mould is shown in detail. CU a demonstration of chemical mixing and weighing. The mould is smoothed and covered with gauze. It is fitted back on the child for final adjustment. It is further cut and the edges have ribbon attached by sewing machine. CU air holes are punched and leather straps attached. CU The final finished leg brace. The brace is fitted to the child. MS the child wearing her new leg brace walks towards camera on crutches. Another young boy on crutches models his leg braces. MS several shots of a young girl being measured and fitted for a back brace Her torso is encased in plaster. A young boy is fitted and strapped into a neck brace, and is hung in a strange contraption whilst the plaster cast is applied. Crippled children in bed outside in the sunshine. They are all in a variety of limb supports. The nurses help them exercise. The children running along the beach and building with spades. CU the group cheering at camera holding a Union Jack flag.
