This video tells the story of Mari Akrami, a woman entrepreneur from Nahr-e-Shahi district of Balkh province, Afghanistan. After her husband was injured, Mari took responsibility for supporting her 13-member family. With limited resources and no access to electricity, gas, or fuel, she chose to produce handmade cleaning products as a sustainable livelihood. With support from the WE-LEAD project and encouragement from HARAKAT, Mari organized local women and formed a 16-member savings group called Lala.” Through small monthly savings and basic accounting training, the group prepared for collective entrepreneurship. Mari and four group members launched their first joint business, producing dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent by hand at home. Their products quickly gained popularity, generating income for five families and building confidence, solidarity, and hope. Today, the Lala group aims to grow into a trusted local brand, while Mari looks to expand opportunities for all women in the group.
