Drugs and alcohol surround us. Unfortunately, abuse of these substances also surrounds us. Further, each of us knows one or more people about whom we are concerned with their use of drugs or alcohol. The deaths and injuries are, to a large extent, preventable. We have lots of resources at our disposal; what’s important is to harness the passion to prevent and intervene more effectively. David Anderson, Ph.D. serves as a Professor and Director, Center for the Advancement of Public Health, School of Recreation, Health and Tourism, College of Education and Human Development, at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He serves as project director and researcher on numerous national, state and local projects, teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on drug and alcohol issues, community health, and health communications; conducts needs assessments; prepares evaluation and analysis; and assists with strategic planning. Specialty areas include drug/alcohol abuse prevention, strategic planning and mobilization, communication and education, health promotion, and needs assessment and evaluation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
