Agriculture officials confirmed a new strain of H5N2 avian influenza which is highly pathogenic and has a mortality rate upwards of 90 percent among ducks and geese. Another avian influenza strain, H5N8, has also been identified, with a protein structure similar to H5N1, which is transmittable to humans. For this reason, officials are quickly undertaking quarantine measures to prevent these viruses from mutating and infecting humans. Taiwan is the only place in the world to exhibit the new variant of H5N2 avian flu. The new strain appears to be a mix of strains that appeared earlier in South Korea and China. It is highly pathogenic, threatening chicken, ducks and geese, with a mortality rate upwards of 90 percent. Through recombination there is a threat that the virus could infect humans.Huang Li-minNTU Pediatrics Infectious DiseasesThe only way for (H5N2) to be transmitted to humans is if it recombines with human influenza viruses, potentially occurring among pigs, ducks or even humans. Another avian flu virus, H5N8, is also highly pathogenic, and its protein structure is similar to H5N1, which can be passed to humans. Doctors warn that early eradication of this strain of virus could potentially prevent transmission to humans. Huang Li-minNTU Pediatrics Infectious DiseasesMost flu viruses have a mortality rate of just 0.01 percent, though avian flu is five to 10 times greater. The CDC is also requesting all poultry workers and epidemic prevention staff to get flu shots. This could prevent the avian virus from mutating quickly and infecting humans.
