Where The Quiet Stayed - Freastovik f@fotogenisk.se - I lived in a house at the edge of town, Where the porch light hummed like a tired old tune, Floorboards bent with a patient sound Under the weight of the moon. Just me and the clock and the ticking walls, And a sink that would drip in rhyme— But sometimes it felt like the silence paused As if waiting its turn with mine. [Verse 2] Doors would open an inch or two Like someone polite slipped through. I’d hear soft steps in the hallway bend Where the shadows quietly grew. My toaster died one Sunday morn, No spark, no glow, no heat— By evening it worked as if reborn, Bread rising warm and sweet. [Pre-Chorus] No fear ever climbed my spine, No dread in the midnight air— Just the sense of a borrowed breath And someone already there. [Chorus] Oh, I swear when I’d fall asleep The mattress would gently sigh, Like someone sat at my bedside To watch the hours drift by. Not cold, not cruel, not strange— Just present, soft and near. A guardian stitched in the dark, Keeping the edges clear. [Verse 3] I’d speak aloud to the empty room, “Whoever you are, stay kind.” The pipes would knock in answer back, Like a hand on the back of mine. Sometimes the air would dip and lean, The curtains lift their lace— Like unseen fingers brushed between The fragile threads of space. [Bridge] Maybe loneliness makes a twin, A shape from dust and air. Or maybe love outlives its skin And chooses to linger there. [Verse 4] It happened on a winter night When frost bit at the panes. My phone lay charging in the kitchen, Thin cord coiled like veins. A spark leapt bright and bloomed to flame, Plastic hissed and curled— Black smoke began its silent claim On my sleeping world. I dreamed of nothing, deep and slow, Till something seized my arm— A violent shake, a wordless pull, A rush of wild concern. [Chorus] A blackened silhouette in smoke, No face that I could see— It dragged me through the smokey hall, Would not let go of me. Half awake I thought, “A fireman— He found me just in time.” Barefoot midst the orange roar, Through choking smoke, felt like grime. [Verse 5] Out into the frozen yard Beneath the fractured sky— I turned to thank the man who saved My breathing, fragile life. But there were only sirens far And neighbors in their fear— No tracks beside me in the snow, No rescuer standing near. [instrumental] Flames devoured my letters, Photographs and frames, Every small and sacred thing Reduced to ash and names. By morning there was nothing left But embers, smoke, and ground— And the echo of a presence I could no longer find. [Chorus] Insurance built me brighter walls, Straight lines, alarms, and locks— New wiring humming safely Inside its tidy box. No doors that breathe, no footsteps pass, No dip beside my bed— No quiet weight upon the sheets, No watchful dark instead. [Final Verse] Sometimes I wake at 3 a.m., Heart reaching for that room— For the hush that felt like company In the tender gloom. They say the fire was old wires, Cheap cords, a spark, bad luck— But something else burned down that night When the old house turned to dust. And I have never feared the dark— Not once since the night I was saved. I only fear the emptiness Of a silence that behaves. [instrumental]
