This playlist is for patients and those interested in learning more about emergency surgical conditions and procedures. I am Dr Juan Klopper, a consultant surgeon at Groote Schuur Hospital and Head of Surgical Education at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. This video contains information on biliary colic, otherwise known as a gallbladder attack. Biliary colic is characterized by severe right-sided upper abdominal pain. It typically starts after a meal and can last for several hours. Some people feel nauseated and can even vomit. Biliary colic is caused by a gallstone that gets stuck in the duct that connects the gallbladder to the bile ducts. Initial treatment involves pain relief. A cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder) prevents further attacks and possible complications.
