Introducing a waste collection company who has not forgotten what service means in the industry. Lucy's Bins - No other waste company quite like it in New Zealand (or possibly in the world). Finally, I am pleased to show off the unique service of Lucy's Bins and the unique trucks they operate. Sadly I did not manage to get a lot of footage as I left going out to mid-morning in hope to not get sun glare while filming (the sun is rather low in the sky at this time of year). Lucy's Bins vehicles are not easy to spot and follow due to the service they offer, so I chose a day where their pickups were in a confined part of town, only approximately 3 blocks wide with a large industrial area in the middle. This paid off but due to my late start, I only captured the last on street pickup before the driver started to collect from long private driveways - why would long driveways make a difference? Well, keep reading to find out more about this service: Lucy's Bins service is a true, grassroots locally owned and operated business. Based in Levin (40 minutes' drive away from where this video was filmed today) the company started collecting bins December 2014. The collection area soon grew into the wider Manawatū and Horowhenua districts. It is a service like no other. They pride themselves on a door-to-door collection. They will collect, empty and return the bin from wherever you leave it on your property. You do not need to remember to put the bin out each week, let alone trudge it out to the curb (especially in the rain) - they come to you. Like their motto says: " Fill & forget, we do the rest ". As seen in this video, the bin was located up the customer's driveway where the driver collected it and returned it. Ideal service for those who might be mobility impaired or struggle to get big bins out onto the street - especially if you have a long driveway. I was amazed to find that in some situations the truck might even drive down customer's long driveways, up to their door, to collect the bin. Sadly this style of collection was the only type left on this driver's run today so I would not be able to follow onto private property. However it helps explain why I spotted the truck reversing down a driveway before I caught up with the driver prior to filming. The small trucks they operate make this ideal for this kind of service. And it makes sense, why drag a bin down a long driveway to empty it on the street if the truck can come to the bin? Even with the door-to-door collection, some customers still choose to place their bins out on the street ready for collection as per the photos in this video. Who is Lucy? Lucy is the founder of Lucy's Bins. She was a one-woman crew who now has a small team working with her. Before starting her own company from scratch in 2014, she had already worked in the rubbish industry for roughly 3 years. She decided to start her own company when she found there was a gap in the market. The gap being a wheelie bin service for people who struggle with their rubbish and recycling bins, those who might forget to put them out, people who work early and come home late, or for people who just cannot be bothered putting them out. Lucy's Bins offer a weekly, fortnightly and monthly service collection service . They operate some larger vehicles in Horowhenua district but I do love the size and colouring of this smaller truck which operates along with a gray truck of similar size in the Manawatū. I have been wanting to document this truck for months now, but filming came with its challenges. As not every wheelie bin due for collection is located out on the curb for the truck to collect, it makes it hard to trace the vehicle movements and know where their next stop might be. This is now even more complicated when the trucks can play hid-and-seek down driveways. The size of the truck is really cool and different to what is usually seen on the streets, but it does make them hard to spot as well (about a size or a large van or SUV/people-mover), they can easily blend in with other vehicles. A lot of my usual "rubbish truck tracking methods" cannot be applied to this service. Hopefully sometime in the future I will be able to get more footage of this fantastic local company and their cool trucks. A big thank you to the driver today for letting me film the truck and letting me know what streets were coming up next. #rubbish #garbagetruck #rubbishtruck #garbage #urbanwaste #trashtruck #truck #compactor #hopper #bags #recycling #wastemanagement #wastebin #waste #refuses
