BURLINGTON, IA - (CBS2/FOX28) The Mississippi River, the Burlington Northern Railroad and features like the serpentine Snake Alley, tell you this town is steeped in rich history before you ever arrive. One of the best places to start ROAD TRIPPIN' in Burlington is at the Des Moines County Heritage Center and the Phelps House, just a few blocks away. Together they provide a beautiful and educational window on the past. The Heritage Center boasts a number of wonderful exhibits, including one on Native American culture with clothing worn by the great Sauk War Chief Black Hawk. Upstairs, Catfish Corner is a hands-on adventure kids love. It is no-tech and imagination required, as youngsters live in a log cabin, pick corn, fish for dinner and takes a ride on an old steam ship. Meantime, The Phelps House Museum may be the most unique look at early Iowa to be found anywhere in the state. The Victorian home, built in 1851, boasts almost all of its original furnishings and samples of clothing worn by those who lived there. The items were all donated by the family. Stepping through the front door is like stepping back in time to the parties and gatherings held in two parlors amid pre - Civil War decor. You will want to take the extra time to hike to the third floor to see the Medical Memories exhibit. Disclosing the most popular parts of the display would be like telling the end of a movie.
