“Six Acres and a Third”: An Introduction with Prof Jatindra Kumar Nayak

ZEST, the English Literary Society of the Department of English of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, University of Delhi organised a lecture on the novel “Six Acres and a Third” by Fakir Mohan Senapati on the 14th of October 2021 at 4 pm on Zoom. The speaker was Prof. Jatindra Kumar Nayak. He is a former professor of English who had taught at Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. He is also an Indian translator, columnist, literary critic, and editor. Professor Nayak has given his invaluable contribution in the translation of several works of Odia Literature into English. He is also a member of the well-known English Advisory Board, Sahitya Academy. He has translated Yantrarudha (“Astride the Wheel”) an Odian novel by Chandrashekhar Rath, in English for which he was awarded the “Hutch-Crossword Book” award in 2004. He had also won Katha Translation Award in 1997 and founded an organization named Rupantar in Bhubaneswar that publishes Odia books in English. “Six Acres and a Third” is an Indian novel in Odia language written by Fakir Mohan Senapati in the 19th century, also known as “Chha Mana Atha Guntha”. Fakir Mohan Senapati is also known as the father of Modern Oriya Literature. The book “Six Acres and a Third” is considered to be the first Indian novel that boldly displays and discusses the exploitation of landless peasants by a feudal lord in British India.
