A woman is now awaiting sentencing after being convicted of all charges for a fire that killed a 5-year-old boy last summer. Prosecutors said Taquida Hendrix intentionally set fire to a duplex on Portland Avenue early July 29, 2024. Malakai Stovall was trapped in an upstairs restroom. Firefighters rescued the boy, but he suffered burns to more than 75 percent of his body and later died. A jury found Hendrix, now 32, guilty Thursday morning of murder, arson and assault. Deliberations began Wednesday afternoon after testimony wrapped up and closing arguments were made. The verdict came within an hour of deliberations resuming Thursday. Stovall's family let out sighs of relief in the courtroom when the verdict was read. "I'm happy. I don't really have any words, to be honest," said Brianna Akers, Stovall's mother. "It does make me feel a little bit better than I thought it would to least be able to hear and see her hear the same thing I did, and that is 'Guilty of murder' and arson and everything she was charged of." Nearly 30 witnesses testified during the trial, including former co-defendants Roy Chambers and Tiakayla Hendrix — Taquida's sister — who pleaded guilty Aug. 7 to arson for the fire.
