Recently, I was fortunate to catch wind of a set being returned to Hornell, so I gave chase. 0:00 Olean Shops I began the morning well before sunrise at the WNYP's shops in Olean. There was a light rain over the city that morning, but the WNYP crew paid no mind as they brought their C430s out from the shed. 2:15 Olean, NY The sun had begun to creep over the hills as OL-1 departed Olean for Hornell. The light rain was still falling as the train crept over the Buffalo Line diamond and past my spot, called out as "RIVER". 4:43 Cuba, NY A deer greeted me after my trek from the crossing to the woods about a half mile back to catch OL-1 passing the original Erie Railroad signal cantilever that still stands guard, albeit long out of service. The rain had thankfully subsided and the sun was now out for the train's slow passing. 6:39 West of Friendship, NY At Hunt Road, about halfway between Cuba and Friendship, the morning sun was optimal to grab an extra shot before Friendship. 8:40 Friendship, NY A WNYP chase for me is not complete without a sign shot, and the sign shot for this chase would be at Depot Street in Friendship. 10:45 East of Friendship, NY By now, my friend Dawson had joined up with me, and we next found an Erie-era bridge over a farm road just east of Friendship. 11:38 CR-20, Friendship We got ahead a little bit and shot OL-1 rounding the curve alongside County Route 20 as the train approached Belvidere. 12:54 Belvidere, NY The tracks swing from north east to south east at Belvidere, with the curve right under the NY-19 overpass next to Van Campen Creek. Bambi decided to test its luck as OL-1 approached, but fortunately there was plenty of time with the train running at a mere 10 miles per hour. 14:15 Belmont, NY Next up was Belmont, as OL-1 flies over the mighty Genessee at milepost JC-366, signifying we are 366 miles from the Erie's terminus in Jersey City, NJ. 16:18 Random Field Shot Somewhere west of Scio, the rain had found us again as OL-1 passes a field. 17:54 Scio, NY Now into Scio, OL-1 heads through town. 19:26 Wellsville, NY Not many depots remain on this stretch of the former Erie, but the one in Wellsville still stands as it awaits restoration in the future. OL-1 rumbles by slowly through the construction zone that's behind us. 20:54 Andover, NY Just west of Andover, OL-1 ducks under NY-21 next to a farm that sits at the base of the valley. 22:43 Tip Top, NY OL-1 now is at the crest of the ruling grade at Tip Top, but is not having to work hard with the light passenger consist in tow compared to a heavy freight train. 24:11 Alfred Station, NY At Alfred, OL-1 crosses over yet another country road with an older style bridge. 25:26 NS 316 Into Hornell, OL-1 had to wait for NS 316 to roll through town before they'd be allowed into the siding to access Alstom. Two mundane AC44C6Ms are the power for this day's edition of the Bellevue-Binghamton manifest. 28:16 Hornell, NY With 316 in the wind, OL-1 gets permission to take the siding at Cass and then access Alstom to drop of the Avelia set. From here, a new crew would take the power and flatcar back to Olean under the cover of darkness, so Hornell would be where we cut the chase off.
