A hysterectomy is a surgical operation to remove all or part of the uterus. The most common reasons for having a hysterectomy include heavy periods – which can be caused by fibroids. pelvic pain – which may be caused by endometriosis, unsuccessfully treated pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), adenomyosis, or fibroids. 00:22 - Precautions to take before a hysterectomy Before going through a hysterectomy, one should have a well-equipped environmental setup, physical setup, mental setup, and a medical setup. One should have a very supportive environment and surroundings. They should be physically active and healthy to withstand and go through the surgery. Other issues like diabetes, thyroid, hypertension should be overcome before going through this surgery. The patient must be mentally stable and should not have any anxiety issues before going through this surgery. The patient should have a good and balanced diet that is rich in iron and fiber to compensate for the blood loss during this surgery. 01:33 - Things to do during/after the hysterectomy surgery During the surgery or soon after the surgery, when the patient is immobile due to anesthesia, the patient should practice breathing exercises. Within 24 hours, when the effects of the anesthesia have worn out, the patient should start moving around and be mobile. Even though it may be painful initially, the sooner the patient starts moving, the sooner the recovery will be. After the surgery, the patient should continue with the iron and fiber-rich diet. The patient should include lots of water and liquids in the diet so as to make the process of passing stools smoother. This will help the stitches to heal faster as there would be little to no stress induced to the area while passing stools. 2:45 Taking care after a hysterectomy The patient should start doing small physical activities such as walking after 2 weeks of surgery. The patient must abstain from any sexual activities for 4-6 weeks after the surgery to give the vagina time to heal. Devices such as tampons and menstrual cups should be avoided for the same reason.
