The story of 31-year-old Harish Rana is one of the most emotional and complex cases related to euthanasia in India. For the past 13 years, Harish has remained in a permanent vegetative state, unable to move or communicate. He can neither speak nor respond, and only an occasional blink of his eyelids serves as the sole indication that he is alive. In 2013, Harish suffered multiple brain injuries and severe neurological damage after falling from the fourth floor of his residence. Since then, he has been dependent on life support systems, including a tracheostomy tube for breathing and a gastrojejunostomy tube for feeding. His parents, especially his father Ashok Rana, spent years seeking treatment in leading hospitals such as PGI Chandigarh and AIIMS Delhi, exhausting their savings and even selling their home in the hope of recovery. When doctors confirmed that there was no possibility of medical improvement, the family approached the Supreme Court of India seeking passive euthanasia to end Harish’s prolonged suffering. In a historic decision, the Supreme Court allowed the gradual withdrawal of life support, recognizing the patient’s right to die with dignity under Article 21 of the Constitution. This landmark ruling has sparked a national conversation on euthanasia laws, patient dignity, and the emotional burden carried by families in such tragic circumstances. #harishrana #news #india Follow us on: Instagram - https://instagram.com/newzgansgter?ig...
