Raymond William Schalk (August 12, 1892 - May 19, 1970) was a professional baseball player who played catcher for most of his career for the Chicago White Sox. He made his Major League Debut on August 11, 1912. Schalk was a member of the 1917 Chicago White Sox team who won the World Series in 6 games against the New York Giants. He was also on the scandal-ridden 1919 White Sox team who lost the World Series in eight games vs the Cincinnati Reds. Eight players who became known as the Black Sox were banned for their involvement on fixing the World Series, despite being acquitted in a court of law. Schalk became a player-manager for two seasons in 1927 and 1928. He was forced to resign as a manager in July of 1928 and was going to return to his position as a catcher, but left after his salary was cut. Schalk joined the New York Giants as a player-coach in 1929. He played in only 5 games, and made his last appearance as a player on September 15, 1929. Schalk joined the Chicago Cubs as a coach in 1930 and 1931. He would then go on to manage several different teams in the minor leagues. Schalk returned to the Cubs as a scout in 1944. He was elected by the Veteran's Committee to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1955 Schalk became an assistant baseball coach at Purdue University and remained there until he retired in 1968. He passed away from cancer on May 19, 1970. Schalk is buried in the Oakland section at Evergreen Cemetery and Mausoleum in Evergreen Park, Illinois.
