In this special edition of The Faces of MWI Pumps video series, Lena Diaz, Vice President of Human Resources, sits down with MWI Pumps President Dana Eller to reflect on her remarkable 32+ year journey with the company as part of its 100-year anniversary celebration. Lena shares how she almost overlooked the job listing in a local newspaper, hesitant to return to an office role after holding a managerial position. But a coworker encouraged her to apply, praising MWI's benefits—a major factor since Lena’s husband was transitioning out of the military. From the moment she walked into the interview, Lena knew MWI was where she belonged. She fondly recalls arriving one day shortly after she started at MWI in her giant Cadillac Deville—turning heads on the factory floor before her petite stature surprised everyone. That same day, she learned what MWI stood for. When local bystanders catcalled her, David Eller, the former president, confronted them, defending her without hesitation. That moment was Lena’s first glimpse of MWI’s "No Fear" core value—long before the company had formally defined its values. Over three decades, Lena has witnessed extraordinary growth at MWI—from paper index cards to integrated digital systems, from a smaller workforce to a company with increased scale, product sophistication, and operational efficiency. She credits the company's healthy, diverse, family-driven culture as a key to its success, appreciating how MWI supports both professional and personal growth. In a light-hearted exchange, Dana asks what became of her iconic Cadillac. Lena laughs, saying she finally sold it after the engine gave out, but not before plenty of admirers tried to buy it off her. Lena reflects proudly on HR's evolution at MWI—balancing legal responsibilities with attracting top talent—and feels honored to be part of a role that has only had a few leaders over a century. She shares joyful memories of employee awards, perfect attendance celebrations, and the company's ability to both honor wins and learn from setbacks. Looking to the future, Lena predicts continued growth for MWI as demand rises for water infrastructure solutions. She’s confident the company will thrive under Dana’s visionary leadership and embrace advancing technologies to build better products and smarter systems. Her advice to the next generation of MWI employees? “Listen and learn with an open mind—especially from those who’ve been here a long time. There’s wisdom all around you. Be proactive.” Lena closes by expressing heartfelt gratitude for the mentors and colleagues she’s worked with and offers a warm Happy 100th Birthday to MWI, saying the company has been a true blessing in her life.
