Athlete: Charles Wright, Midlothian High School 1979 Graduate, Football Charles Wright’s story is one of quiet toughness, commitment, and a lifelong dedication to his community. Charles moved to Midlothian in the summer before his sophomore year…..quickly becoming part of the fabric of Midlothian High School. From the moment he arrived, it was clear Charles brought a strong work ethic and a team-first mindset, qualities that would define both his athletic career and his life beyond the field. A 1979 graduate of Midlothian High School, Charles made his biggest impact on the football field. Under the guidance of Hall of Honor Coaches: Ronnie Joe Clanton and Eugene Dryer, Charles earned a reputation as a hard worker, a great teammate, and a talented lineman who could be counted on when it mattered most. Coach Clanton spoke highly of Charles, not just for Charles abilities, but for the kind of young man Charles was. During the 1978 season, Charles played a key role on the District 12-AA Championship team, which finished the year 8–2. That season marked one of the strongest football campaigns of the era and showcased Charles’s growth and toughness along the offensive line. Charles' performance did not go unnoticed. Charles was named to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Blue-Chip Senior Talent Watchlist as a lineman and earned Texas Sports Writers Association Class 2A Second Team All-State honors as an offensive tackle, recognition reserved for the best players in the state. While football was his primary focus, Charles was also a multi-sport athlete. He competed in basketball during his sophomore year, spent two years in track, and was actively involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for two years, reflecting a balance of athletics, leadership and faith. After high school, Charles carried all those same values into adulthood and service. Charles dedicated 25 years to the Midlothian Fire Department, beginning as a volunteer firefighter before becoming a paid firefighter, eventually retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. Charles’ career in fire service mirrored the way he played football……dependable, disciplined, and focused on protecting and serving others. Today, Charles continues to lead at a high level as the Senior Safety Director for the State of Texas with Core Construction, the number one K-12 builder and number one municipal builder in the state. In that role, Charles remains responsible for the safety and well-being of teams across Texas, a responsibility he carries with the same integrity that has defined his entire life. Family has always been central to Charles’ story. He has been married to his wife Laura for 45 years, and together they have raised three children: Brady, Valerie, and Benton. Charles remains a proud Midlothian resident, with deep family roots still in the community, including both of Charles’s sisters. Charles Wright represents a generation of Midlothian athletes whose legacy is built on grit, humility, and service. Charles’ impact reaches far beyond Friday night lights, into classrooms, fire stations, job sites, and the community Charles continues to call home.
