Please note that most information in this video and this season summary are preliminary and could change. If a new storm occurs after this publishing date, this video will be taken down and re-uploaded later with the updated information. (This message will be removed when 2025 ends.) “It only takes one.” The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season was the first season to be below-average in terms of named storms since 2015, but still had 3 category 5 hurricanes, the most since 2005. It featured 13 named storms, 5 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes. Early in the season, Barry and Chantal made landfall in Mexico and South Carolina, respectively. Erin became a category 5 and impacted the Greater Antilles. Gabrielle came close to Bermuda as a Category 4. Humberto also became category 5, but stayed out to sea. However, Humberto actually stopped a major landfall by pulling Imelda away from the east coast. Imelda was a category 2 that impacted the Caribbean. Imelda threatened the East Coast of the US, but was pulled east by Humberto. Then, a couple of weak storms formed after Imelda, but the basin lightened up after Tropical Melissa formed in the Caribbean. Melissa ended up strengthening rapidly, then making a catastrophic landfall near New Hope, Jamaica. It became the strongest landfall in the basin, tied with the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, with 185 mph winds and a minimum pressure of 892 mb. Melissa caused 10 billion dollars in damages, as well as claiming 102 lives. Melissa is the final storm in the season to date. The season did ~10.6 billion dollars in damages, mostly caused by Melissa. The total ACE for the season was 132.5, which is above average, despite the below average activity. 2025 really shows us that it only takes one system to destroy a nation, and that any season, below or above average, can deliver devastating impacts.
