Come behind-the-scenes with the Associates to find out how Playwright Patrick Gabridge wrote 'A Revelation of Character,' a brand-new play about Lydia Maria Child and Maria Weston Chapman, two formidable female abolitionists, using letters in the Boston Public Library's Anti-Slavery Collection as his primary source of research. A Revelation of Character was commissioned by the Associates of the Boston Public Library as a part of our Pierce Performance Series in partnership with Plays in Place. Come see A Revelation of Character at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square on November 12, 13, and 15! About the Associates' Pierce Performance Series Now in its seventh year, the Associates’ Pierce Performance Series seeks to raise awareness of the Boston Public Library’s Special Collections through free public performances. Past performances have commemorated milestones such as the hundredth anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, and 250th publication anniversary of Phillis Wheatley Peters’ book of poetry, and the legacy of conductor Serge Koussevitzky. Thanks to the Harold Whitworth Pierce Charitable Trust, these performances have brought the Library's historical treasures to life for a broad audience. Since its inception in 1972, the Associates has been the driving force and sponsor behind many programs, including the Writer-in-Residence program, the Hundred-Year Book Debate, and Literary Lights. About Plays in Place Founded in 2017, Plays in Place is a theatre company that creates new site-specific plays in partnership with museums, historic spaces, and other institutions. They have extensive experience bringing historical stories and sites to life in ways that deeply engage audiences. They are currently at work on projects in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, and are consulting with the Texas Historic Commission on a series of potential projects. Plays in Place projects employ dozens of theatrical artists, and every year they work with a diverse group of playwrights to research, develop, and write new plays.
