This Restorative Reminder is from a training where I emphasize the point that Restorative Practices isn’t only about not suspending students from school. A growing number of schools and districts are more open to Restorative Practices primarily because they need to reduce their number of suspensions. While less suspensions is a great by-product of implementing Restorative Practices, it shouldn’t be the only reason why you are choosing to implement Restorative Practices. In reality, you don’t need Restorative Practices to stop suspending kids. The decision to suspend a student is a choice that can be made whether or not you implement Restorative Practices. Even if a school or district’s policy is to suspend students for certain behaviors, the policy is a choice. Just as you make the choice to suspend students, you can make the choice to not suspend. Restorative Practices does provide alternatives to hold students accountable for inappropriate behavior but making the choice not to suspend students isn’t Restorative Practices. If your goal is to change students’ behavior while holding them accountable for inappropriate behavior, this can be achieved with Restorative Practices.
