The Süleymaniye Mosque is less visited than the Blue Mosque but definitely worth a visit. As a bonus, you get a great view of New Istanbul, the Golden Horn, and the Bosporus Strait. The mosque was built on the order of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. The construction work began in 1550 and the mosque was finished in 1557 and designed by the greatest architect of his time, Mimar Sinan. The mosque was extensively renovated from 2008-2010. The main dome is 174 feet high and has a diameter of 90 feet. At the time it was built, the dome was the highest in the Ottoman Empire. This vast religious complex blended Islamic and Byzantine architectural elements. It combines tall, slender minarets with large domed buildings supported by half domes in the style of the Byzantine church Hagia Sophia.
