Aniline merged with L. Gevaert & Cie, a company founded in 1894 in Antwerp, Belgium and specialising in the manufacture of photographic paper. The AFGA trade mark first appeared in 1897. By then the firm was manufacturing X-ray plates and photographic film products and soon after, in 1903, it began producing 35mm motion film stock. The Agfa Clack is a medium format camera. It was introduced in 1954 and was built until 65. It is considered the last box camera from Agfa. The Agfa Clack was one of the most popular cameras of the 1950s and 1960s. Due to the 6x9 negative format, you could take 8 photos on a 120 film. A simple lens in combination with the slightly curved rear wall ensured beautifully sharp photos. The Agfa Clack was sold in the US through Agfa’s New Jersey office as the Agfa Weekender. About 1.65 million were produced, more than all other Agfa box camera models combined. It is made from sheet metal covered in black imitation reptile leather, later ones were made of plastic. This camera is super-lighweight and small and feels like a toy. Like many German cameras the whole back comes off for film loading. It’s actually more like a Chinese puzzle the way it fits together seamlessly. The reverse Galilean viewfinder is made from plastic. The plastic carrier strap on left side of body is secured by nickel metal fittings. The winding knob is made of grey plastic. The shutter has two modes - timed(B) and instant(M). It has a threaded socket to take a remote cable. There are two flash contacts on the top of the camera. The red window has a swinging cover. On the base there is a tripod mount. The camera body is oval shaped when viewed from above, and the film is led around the curved back of the camera to create maximum sharpness: an intelligent solution to create a low-cost camera of decent quality. The Agfa Clack is also referred to as the cult camera of the 1950s, although it still belongs to the box cameras. At that time it was designed as an entry-level model. Turn locking lever anti-clockwise until the two dots face each other at ‘OPEN’. The top part pulls out. Unwrap Film, in subdued light, and remove adhesive strip. Give the film winding knob approx. 2 turns. Turn the locking lever at the bottom to the right till both dots lie side by side at `LOCK´. Open the window cover in the direction of the arrow, turn winding knob until number `1` appears in the red film window. Wind on film after each exposure until the next number. After the last exposure 8, wind on the film until the end until the end of the backing paper has pased the film window.
